In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
