Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.

He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
